The Flood Took Everything. Not Her Dignity.
When disaster strikes, relief arrives carrying the essentials we immediately think of—food, clean water, medicine, blankets, and shelter. These supplies save lives, but they don't meet every need. There is another crisis unfolding quietly inside every flood shelter. One that rarely makes headlines and is often left out of emergency response plans. For thousands of girls and women displaced by the devastating July 2026 floods across Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and surrounding districts, managing their periods has become an impossible challenge. With homes submerged and communities cut off, access to sanitary products has disappeared. Many girls and women are forced to rely on torn cloth, newspaper, or even leaves to manage their menstruation. In overcrowded shelters with little privacy and poor sanitation, these unsafe alternatives expose them to urinary and reproductive tract infections while stripping away their comfort, confidence, and dignity. Some women choose not to seek refuge in emergency shelters at all because separate toilets, private spaces, and basic menstrual hygiene facilities simply do not exist. During a disaster, no one should have to choose between personal safety and personal dignity. This is the invisible emergency that Wreetu Health and Well-being Foundation has been addressing since 2016. Founded by Umme Sharmin Kabir, Wreetu has become one of Bangladesh's leading menstrual health organizations, reaching more than 150,000 adolescents and community members across 22 districts. Through education, advocacy, reusable menstrual products, and community outreach, Wreetu has spent years ensuring that girls and women can manage their periods safely, confidently, and without shame. Their work also extends to indigenous communities through menstrual health materials translated into the Chakma language, allowing them to reach populations that many organizations cannot.
